The highly anticipated new and slimmer versions of the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition are already starting to ship out, even before their intended release date in November. This news has created quite a buzz among gamers who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of these redesigned consoles.
One of the most noticeable visual changes in the new PS5 models is the addition of four separate cover panels. This departure from the previous single console cover design has caught the attention of many gaming enthusiasts.
However, it’s the fine print on the back of the box that has revealed an important and previously unknown detail about the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive that can be attached to the PS5. Surprisingly, it has been disclosed that this add-on requires an internet connection to function properly.
The new PS5 Digital Edition does not have the capability to play physical media by default. However, Sony has allowed for the removal of one of the cover panels to be replaced with an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, similar to how parts are swapped on gaming PCs. But what gamers didn’t know until now is that this swapping process requires an internet connection to work.
Images of a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III PS5 Digital Edition bundle posted by CharlieIntel have shed light on the matter. The disclaimer text on the back of the box states that an internet connection is required to pair the Disc Drive and PS5 console during the setup process. It seems that this requirement is in place to ensure the authenticity of the hardware and its compatibility with the PS5.
While this internet connection requirement is understandable from a verification and piracy prevention standpoint, it does raise concerns about the availability of third-party disc drives or other PS5 add-ons not manufactured by Sony. Additionally, there are worries about game preservation, as the online support for the PS5 may eventually be discontinued, making it impossible for new PS5 Digital Edition owners to purchase games or add a disc drive to play physical copies.
Although the internet connection requirement may not be a dealbreaker for most gamers at the moment, it’s important to keep this factor in mind if you plan on purchasing the new PS5 Digital Edition and an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive in November. It’s worth considering the long-term implications and potential limitations that may arise due to this requirement.
