As our lives have become increasingly digitized, online privacy concerns have become a mainstream issue. What was once the domain of businesses and cybersecurity enthusiasts has now become a common concern among citizens worldwide. People are now actively seeking out privacy-preserving software such as VPN services and secure messaging apps to protect their online activities.
The Global Encryption Coalition (GEC) is an organization consisting of over 300 members from around the world. Its mission is to promote and defend encryption while supporting companies in offering encrypted services to their users. The GEC’s Steering Committee is made up of esteemed organizations such as the Internet Society, Mozilla, the Internet Freedom Foundation, Global Partners Digital, and the Centre for Democracy and Technology.
However, there is a significant challenge facing encryption, the very system responsible for preserving people’s anonymity. Governments worldwide are increasingly viewing encryption as an obstacle and are attempting to break it down in the name of security. For instance, the recently passed UK Online Safety Bill is just one example of regulations that aim to undermine encryption.
Recognizing the high stakes involved in the future of privacy and security, the Global Encryption Coalition (GEC) has organized an online event called “Power to the People: The Encryption Summit.” This summit consists of five panels, aiming to celebrate the empowering nature of encryption, address the regulatory challenges it faces, and foster unity within the encryption community.
As the Encryption Summit unfolds, I will be reporting on the insights shared by experts participating in the event. Stay tuned and scroll down to follow our live blog coverage, where you can keep up with the latest discussions and developments in the world of encryption.
Remember, in this increasingly digitized world, protecting our online privacy and security is of utmost importance. Let’s celebrate and support encryption as a crucial tool in safeguarding our digital lives.
