Two passionate enthusiasts, Oscar Barea and Ash Evans, embarked on a project in 2022 to create their own custom version of the classic Voodoo graphics card. Their “VoodooX” card is based on the 3dfx VSA-100 GPU, which was widely used in 3dfx cards like the Voodoo4 4500 and Voodoo5 5500.
Despite using “new” VSA100 chips, the VoodooX boasts a modern upgrade: DVI video output. This offers a significant improvement over analog VGA video, resulting in crisper and clearer images with enhanced colors.
The VoodooX features an impressive 32MB of RAM. However, the enthusiasts are working on creating a switch that allows users to toggle between 32MB and 64MB RAM, matching the VSA100’s full potential.
3dfx GPUs hold a special place in computing history, particularly for their early contributions to consumer-accessible 3D acceleration. The VoodooX project by Barea and Evans serves as a nostalgic reminder of these pioneering days.
The unwavering dedication of enthusiasts like Barea and Evans is a testament to their passion for preserving tech history. Their efforts to revive a significant piece of the past allow others to experience and appreciate the legacy of 3dfx Voodoo graphics cards.
While the days of new Voodoo graphics cards are long gone, the resurgence of interest sparked by Barea and Evans’ project demonstrates the enduring love for these iconic components. Despite a parody account’s brief attempt to raise hopes, the reality is that Nvidia, the current owner of 3dfx’s assets, will likely never release another Voodoo card in the future.
