After years of staying out of the generative AI game, Apple is reportedly gearing up to introduce its own AI, known as “Apple GPT,” to a wide range of products and services. According to tech reporter Mark Gurman, Apple executives were taken by surprise by the AI fever in the industry and have been working to catch up since late last year.
One of the areas where Apple plans to infuse generative AI is Siri. Gurman suggests that Siri will undergo a major overhaul that will deeply implement content-generating AI. This could potentially help Siri catch up with rival services from Google and Amazon.
Apple is also looking to incorporate generative AI into its existing apps. Apps like Pages, Keynote, Apple Music, and Xcode could automatically generate content like playlists, slide decks, and app code. Furthermore, Apple’s operating systems, including iOS 18, are expected to benefit from new features that improve the capabilities of Siri and the Messages app in handling questions and auto-completing sentences.
To power these improvements, Apple has been testing a large language model called Ajax in its own Apple GPT chatbot. The development of this language model has been ongoing for years, suggesting that Apple may be close to launching its AI features.
While the improved Siri could potentially be ready as soon as next year, there are still concerns and debates within Apple regarding the technology. One major debate revolves around whether to rely on cloud-based processing or on-device processing to ensure user privacy. Apple may ultimately opt for a mixed approach to strike a balance between privacy and advanced features.
Apple’s entry into the AI game is an attempt to catch up with competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Bard. However, the company still has a long way to go before its AI efforts can truly compete. The next few years will be crucial for Apple as it strives to bridge the gap and establish itself as a serious player in the AI space.
