Amazon has recently introduced passkey support on its website, joining other tech giants in offering a more convenient and secure way to log in. With passkeys, users can sign into apps and websites without the hassle of remembering passwords or usernames. This feature aims to address the common issues of weak passwords and password reuse, which can compromise account security.

When using passkeys on supported sites and apps, users will be prompted to create a passkey and choose their preferred authentication method, such as Face ID or fingerprint input, depending on their device. Instead of juggling multiple passwords, users can simply glance at their screen or tap their finger to log in effortlessly.

However, Amazon’s implementation of passkeys seems to have some limitations. Currently, passkey support is only available on the Amazon website and not within the Amazon shopping app or Prime Video. This restriction makes the passkey feature feel somewhat redundant, especially considering that clicking an Amazon link on a mobile browser automatically opens the app.

According to Amazon’s official site, users will still need to verify a one-time code after signing in with the passkey, without providing a clear explanation as to why. This raises questions about how passkeys will affect users who have enabled two-factor authentication (2FA). Currently, it appears that users with 2FA enabled will still have to go through the verification process, which diminishes the speed and convenience offered by passkeys.

Future Improvements and Amazon’s Response

As more companies like Google, WhatsApp, and Microsoft embrace passkeys, it is hoped that Amazon will catch up and find a more seamless way to enhance the login experience. Amazon spokesperson Adam Montgomery shared some insight, stating that the company is in the early stages of adding passkey support for Amazon.com and aims to provide customers with another secure way to access their accounts. More information is expected to be shared soon.

In the meantime, while passkey support on the Amazon website is a step in the right direction, it is important to consider its limitations and the need for further improvements to ensure a truly streamlined login process.
